Coming in 2023: SO. MUCH. STUFF.

My head spins when I think about how fast this year flew by. For the most part, this was a good thing. Work-wise, I kept so busy that I neglected my own website. I know — shame on me. My goal is to fix that in the waning days of 2022 and into 2023. I have a list of fresh client projects I want to show off, and I might write a more detailed bio, like I promised when I started this site last year. I am even contemplating a blog. Remember those? With social media in a moment of reckoning, I closed most of my accounts and have taken to smaller community projects. The blog might be an extension of that mentality.

I have been extraordinarily lucky to have worked closely with a small number of clients on long-term or ongoing projects this year. The challenges unique to each project have kept me learning and growing as a developer. The consistent work has been kind to the bank account. And I cannot be more grateful for the kind words of my clients, who have been my biggest advertisers simply by recommending me to someone they know. For a freelancer, that's a godsend. If you're one of the people I was lucky enough to work with this year, thank you for putting your faith in me.

As we march into a new year, I am looking forward to more project-based learning. Most of my "just for fun" time in 2022 got sidelined for paid work, a kitchen remodel this summer, and an increased involvement with Roddenberry Podcasts, which I hope will continue. These were all good "problems" that distracted me from building projects, but I cannot forget the time I lost to recovering from Covid and shingles — thankfully, not at the same time. They both still sucked. Looking forward, I see a JavaScript refresh in my future and working up from there. If you have a suggestion for a fun project, scroll down to the bottom of this page and let me know via the contact form.

Here's to the continued building, learning, and growing in this ever-evolving thing we call the Web.

I'm a freelance front-end web developer

Photo of Char Hi, I'm Char! My experience with website development goes all the way back to 1996, when I taught myself HTML basics in my teens. I had no idea back then that I was setting the stage for the career I am launching now, 25 years later. If you're wondering what took me so long to pursue web development as a career, and you want to know what I was doing in the meantime, stay tuned. I'll write a more detailed bio soon.

Put simply, I love coding. It's art. It's something everybody can learn, but sticking with it requires true love for the process. This website is all about sharing what I am learning as a webdev-in-progress and a budding professional.

My current skillset includes HTML, CSS, Sass, JavaScript, Git, some Python, and Bootstrap. I am currently learning Svelte, and plan on rebuilding this site with it so I can put what I've learned into practice. I also work in platforms like WordPress, SquareSpace, and Wix for freelance clients.

One year from now, I fully expect to look back at this version of my website and think, "I can do so much more now." One thing I love about website development is its constant evolution, which means there will always be something new to learn, and I am voraciously learning new things all the time.

As I continue refining my skills, I am also interested in helping individuals and small businesses with their website needs, whether it involves starting a new site from scratch or updating a site that already exists. Please see the section below for more.
